ABOUT SAM KADI
Born and raised in Syria, Sam began his early career in entertainment while attending the College of Engineering at the University of Aleppo. Founding the Marya Halab Theatre Company, he wrote, directed, and appeared in eighteen plays during the group’s successful seven year run. As Sam's status as a playwright grew, he was invited to perform stateside, in 2000, as a special guest of the Detroit based ACA Theatre Company.
Excited by the opportunities the United Staes had to offer, Sam decided to stay. Unfortunately, the attacks of September 11th the following year made life extremely difficult for Arab-Americans, especially those new to America. Vowing to share his unique experience by telling his story with the world, Sam left his stable career as an engineer to pursued his passion for filmmaking. He enrolled in the Motion Picture Institute of Michigan and graduated in 2007.
Sam and his production company, Samer K. Production, have completed six shorts, documentaries, and promotional films including; “SCHIZOPHRENIA” (distributed by Indieflix) and “RAISED ALONE” (eight-time festival winner, including Best Family Short Film at New York International Independent Film Festival and Best Michigan Film at Detroit-Windsor International Film Festival, and an additional seven nominations).
Sam directed and produced (3K Pictures) his first feature film, “THE CITIZEN” in 2011. Starring Khaled Nabawy (“Fair Game”), Agnes Bruckner (“Blood & Chocolate”), Rizwan Manji (“Outsourced”), William Atherton (“Ghostbusters”), and Cary Elwes (“The Princess Bride”), “THE CITIZEN” incorporates many true stories of the hardships and triumphs Arab-Americans faced during that dark period of American History. “THE CITIZEN” was screened at the Marche du Film at Cannes Film Festival in 2012.
Sam has been recognized by the prestigious foundation "Cinema for Peace," for raising awareness about human rights issues through film, and was invited to speak before the International Criminal Court at The Hague, The Netherlands in June 2012.
